Choosing a host and domain
The first step in building a personal or business website, no matter which method you choose, is choosing a web hosting service and domain name. A website is a company that provides the server and block space for your website and provides access to the online world for you. A domain name is a URL (for example, www.hostingadvice.com) people used to navigate directly to your website.
Choose a website or website builder.
Choosing a website builder is easy. Top web hosts pull out all the stops to speed up and shorten the initial website creation process–often starting with:
To get started, we recommend a hosting plan with one of the following providers. Any of these providers are on a plan to listen to the website of smaller websites between listing suspect hosting.
Before deciding which way you want to build a website. Note that many hosting providers offer free website creation with their plans. Website builders like Squarespace and Wix also offer a set of hosting options, so be sure to review all of your options before choosing.
Your web server will quickly set up and most likely give you a free domain name of your choice. You will create your website once you are sending your:
Choosing a domain name
Custom domain name registration is important to help people find and remember your site. If you’ve chosen a web hosting company that offers a free domain name for the first year of service, you’re halfway there.
Consider these tips for choosing a domain name:
Make it short and memorable: Short domain names are easy to remember. The title should be something that sticks in people’s minds. Long domain names only work if they are unique and catchy.
Use relevant keywords: Your domain name is another opportunity to include keywords that contribute to your overall search engine optimization (SEO) strategy. Keywords that apply to your business niche will make your domain name stick in people’s memory and boost your search engine rankings. Do your research: Check to see if other companies or individuals are using a domain name that is closely related to avoiding any conflicts or confusion. You want your brand to stand out on your website and social media platforms. Choose the domain name extension: As you know from browsing the web, domain names can end in .com, .org, or .biz. Choose one that best suits your website’s purpose. We recommend sticking with .com. This is the most common top-level domain (TLD), and most of your potential site visitors will assume that your website ends in .com.
Once you’ve purchased your web hosting plan and gained a custom domain, you’re ready to build and launch your website.
Choose a site creation method
A website can be created in one of three ways. If you’re a beginner, the easiest way to create and launch a site is to use the website builder provided by your web host. If you are web savvy, you can use WordPress or a content management system (CMS) such as Drupal or Joomla.
If you’re a web developer, you can start from scratch and build a site from the ground up using basic HTML. Each approach has its own merits and challenges:
Option 1: Use Site Builder (Beginner Level)
Using a website builder—an application that walks you through the steps of building a website without code—can liberate and empower. The provider does all the coding on the backend, and it’s no more difficult than using a word processor.
Various website builders, such as Wix, Squarespace, and Weebly (now a product of Square Online), allow non-programmers to design web pages visually, without coding.
A template-based website builder usually offers fewer customization options than if you were to build a website from scratch using HTML. But, for the limited skills required, a website builder offers flexibility and a good user experience for newcomers.
When you start your website-building journey with tools like Wix or Squarespace, you can expect a small learning curve. However, once you spend some time working on them, you find they are relatively painless.
Before you get started, check out our complete guide to learning how to build a website with Wix and Squarespace. These guides will set you up with the basics for a smooth experience as you build your site’s first web page.
Option 2: Install WordPress (Intermediate Level)
Many business owners and employees have very little coding skills. It can limit relying on a web designer or web developer to create and maintain your site. WordPress is an interesting solution for businesses that want a basic website with a minimal investment of time and money—plus, you can install WordPress in minutes.
More than a third of websites on the Internet are hosted on the WordPress platform, and even large companies, such as CNN and eBay, use it. There are free and paid versions of the software, and plenty of online user support is available.
I love the WordPress dashboard for its sleek, clean design. Choose from a premium theme and take advantage of an ever-growing library of WordPress plugin power. Recommend some of our favorite plugins for WPForms in Contact Forms.
With so many themes and layouts to choose from and even more designs and features to use, WordPress is a versatile choice for many businesses. This is the platform that powers HostingAdvice.com itself.
Option 3: Create a website with HTML (advanced level)
Web design skills are precious in the job market, and maybe you thought it was something you wanted to pursue. Start building your site from the website and you will get the tools you need at the right time.
There’s a steep learning curve but a big reward, because knowing HTML allows you to fine-tune your website design and leverage those skills to expand and update the site with ease.
The website is not just for computer science professionals. If you’re new to programming and committed to learning, you’ll want coding skills specifically for your production — or career — axis.
There are lots of resources: Shakardara is a good place to talk, and websites like:

Codecademy
Coursera
Similar websites publish more secure coding tutorials and related articles. These resources cover the basics of how to create sites with beautifully responsive design and great user experiences.
Learning to learn any site by yourself is empowering you to strengthen yourself. Not to mention the fact that being able to code is a precious skill.
Start building the website
With a web hosting plan, domain name, and site-building strategy under your belt, you’re ready to shape your site and its content.
Option 1: Using a Website Builder to Design Your Site (Beginner)
Creating a website with a Free Website Builder is a quick, simple process. You may have already signed up for a hosting account in the first step, in which case specific steps to install and use the free website builder your web host has included for you on the site. There will be wise instructions.
For the sake of this exercise, we’ll go through the steps of building a website with Wix, which is often awarded as the best website builder. If you don’t already have one, click the links below to sign up for a Wix account. Enter your email address and password on the Wix.com signup page to get started.
Note that the email address handle will become part of your free domain (if you don’t have a custom domain), so keep that in mind when signing up.
If you haven’t already, sign up for Wix here >>
1. Choose the category that best describes your website. This helps people find your website and helps Wix cater to the platform’s diverse user base. Your choice will determine what templates you browse, so consider the best option for the site you want to build — whether it’s a personal or business website.
Wix now has two options for creating a website. In addition to the traditional Wix editor, there’s also Wix ADI, an artificial intelligence program that designs custom sites based on your answers. We recommend using the Wix Editor, which gives you full control over the customizations available on the platform. However, if you want to try Wix ADI by all means, go for it.
2. Choose from a wide variety of website templates. These are different depending on the type of website you have — whether it’s a professional portfolio website or an online store for your business. Filter options by image, search by keyword, or sort templates by category.
The wealth of industry-specific and industry-specific themes available in Wix is something I find attractive. You can also choose a blank website template to start completely from scratch or with a basic layout.
Template
Each template starts with pre-filled text and a background image. Your template is the starting point for making the site your own. One of the first things you should do on your new Wix page adds your business information.
Fill in your brand name, slogan, social media, and other relevant details by simply clicking on the text that needs to be changed. You can also change the visual aspects of the page, including the background image, and add or change images on other pages of your site.
There are many ways to add content and customize your site. Click the Add button in the left-hand menu for several options: Text, Button, Slideshow, Menu, etc. Under the Apps button, you’ll find optional features to add functionalities like comments, live chat, and an online store for e-commerce sites. You can also upload your multimedia content, such as fonts, images, videos, and music, and start a blog.
Click “Publish” in the right corner to put your site on the web. You’ll choose a domain, which can be a free domain from Wix.com or a custom domain you get through a domain registrar.
Option 2: Using WordPress to Build Your Site (Intermediate)
Using WordPress to build your site is practically the same as using a website builder. Which platform you should use is a matter of preference. It depends on which one feels most intuitive to you and gives you the most flexibility to design and maintain your site. A major advantage of WordPress is a large community of support from official and other WP software users.
Most hosting plans include easy access to WordPress — installing the software with one click, or even better, having it pre-installed for you. In most cases, you can simply log into your hosting control panel and find the option to install WordPress. If your hosting service does not have this capability, you can find manual installation instructions here.

Take some time to familiarize yourself with the WordPress backend for your account. You’ll learn how to manage your content, change the site’s appearance, add site editors, and install plugins. Your WordPress dashboard has everything you’ll need to monitor your content and build a professional website-like quality.
Under the Appearance tab in the dashboard, you can choose from several free themes (or choose to pay for a premium theme). Installing a WordPress theme is as easy as selecting “Install” and then “Activate” for the template you want. You can change your theme without changing the other content on your WordPress website.
To add a new page to your site, select “Pages” and then “Add New”. You can make these pages part of your site’s navigation menu under the Menu option in the Appearance tab. To add a blog post (if you want a blog on your site), go to “Posts” and then “Add New.”
By default, WordPress will place your latest posts on your home page. To select a specific page to serve as your home page, select “Settings” from the WordPress dashboard menu and then select “Reading”. In the Front Page Display section, select “A Static Page” and then select the page you created as your homepage.
Plugins are extensions — not set up by default in WordPress — that add new features to your site. Many WordPress plugins are free, but you can pay extra for the advanced features that a premium plugin offers. WordPress plugins can enhance the functionality of your site, help you achieve the goals you have for your site, and provide a better user experience for your website visitors.
Website SEO Analytics
Use plugins, such as Google Analytics, to track and improve your site activity.
For example, the Google Analytics plugin helps you track your site activity, and the NextGEN Gallery plugin lets you display image galleries. Under “Plugins” in the dashboard, you can search through options – literally thousands of free plugins. Just click “Install”, and you’re ready to go.
You’ll have created a content-filled, visually appealing, and functional site. Publishing in WordPress is at the page or post level, so you’ll need to click “Publish” for each area of your site.
You can publish individual pages and posts as you create them, or wait until your WordPress website is completely ready to launch. After publishing a new page on your site, go to the Google Search Console to request indexing. It improves your site’s performance in search engine rankings.
Option 3: Use HTML to build a website from scratch (advanced)
For those who want a challenge and have a little extra time, creating a website using HTML is a worthwhile endeavor that develops your understanding of web editing and design. You can set up a basic site in just a few hours and build on it as you learn more HTML and CSS skills.
As with the first two ways to create a website, your first step is to sign up with a hosting provider. We recommend going with a cheap, reputable provider with excellent customer support. Our current top contenders are listed below:

To write HTML tags, you’ll need a high-quality text editor that supports the language of the web. A notepad is a good option for Microsoft users, while Textmate is ideal for Mac users. Cross-platform text editors include Atom and Sublime Text.
You can create websites strictly using HTML, which translates to text files named with the extension .html. Your site’s main page is usually titled index.html. Create and save this file, then populate it with the basic framework of your HTML site. It will look something like this:
Tags enclose the entire content of your site and show that it is an HTML document. This tag includes your page title, meta tags (which tell the browser details about your page’s content and display), and references to your external CSS files to style your page. The actual content of your page is between the tags.
When building your site, you’ll want to organize your files into folders according to the structure in which you want your site to appear. For example, you can create a folder for your contact form page that contains your contact.html file, any relevant CSS that adds styling to your site, and a folder for your images.
When adding links to your entire site on your site pages, you will reference their folder location in the directory where you store your files.
Write your content in a section of each .html file (ie, each page) of your site. Here are some important tags to know when building your site:
Tags
Head tag marks the top of your document and is where your page title and logo appear. This is where you will reference your external style guide (CSS) and link to Google Analytics for search engine optimization purposes. The nav tag is used to create your site menu, which is the main navigation of your site where visitors find links to the top-level site. The main tag represents the main content of your page. It is used to group content within a page. Think about the articles you find online that are grouped under individual topics. You can use div tags for individual pieces of content on a page such as a blog post, image, video, or contact form. This is a way of structuring the page so that these objects are easily identified. Your footer is at the bottom of the website. Developers use this area to insert contact information, terms of service, privacy policy, and social media links.
You may also want to add a basic navigation bar to your site. It provides easy access to the main pages of your site. You’ll use the nav tag and the unordered list tag to sort it.
Filled with these tags, the basic structure of your page should look like this:
And the sound! Now your site visitors can easily return to your blog, online store, contact form, and back to homepage!
You can make your site more visually interesting with formatting, colors, and images using HTML. But adding CSS, or cascading style sheets, to your site gives you more control over its appearance.
External styling is stored in a CSS file that is attached to the head tags of your HTML files. The CSS file is usually titled styles.css. Some of the basic functions of the CSS include adding colors, borders, backgrounds, and page layouts. This step is more advanced than using basic HTML, but it can enhance the aesthetics of your site.
Once you’re happy with the layout, you can publish your site. That’s fine if your site is basic, to begin with. As long as it looks professional, you can feel good about putting it on the web and can improve it as you develop your HTML and CSS skills.
How much will it cost? Can I create a website for free?
Thanks to hosting providers and website building options, your website can cost you less than a fancy cup of coffee per month. The biggest cost associated with building a website yourself is the monthly cost of web hosting. With free hosting trials and budget-friendly plans, you can build the website of your dreams with little financial investment.
Wix offers a free 30-day trial on its drag-and-drop website builder plans.
Kamatera offers a 30-day free trial on its cloud hosting plans (for developers who quickly develop a new project).
1 and 1 IONOS shared hosting plans start at [price shortcode] per month.
Hostinger’s shared hosting plans start at [price shortcode] per month.
Popular WordPress hosts, such as SiteGround, DreamHost, and WP Engine, offer monthly plans in the $3 to $10 range.
As your business grows and your website traffic increases, website costs can increase. You can expect to pay a little more for sites with over 30,000 monthly visitors. You can also pay more for premium plugins and paid ads. The bottom line is: you decide how much to invest in your site.
All done! Now for the hard part… adding the content.
As with our event planning friend, you might not think you can build your website at first — but it’s easier than ever for beginners to create functional and visually appealing sites. With the help of online resources and the WordPress community, my friend built a site he was proud of — and you can too.
The most important thing to consider about your site is the content, which will attract people to view and read. Consider what you want your site to be, whether it’s your business or a blog on a specific topic. Consider carefully, as this will also determine the direction of your web design. Once you’ve got some content ideas and a solid plan, you’re ready to begin the adventure of building your site.
