What do you do when you need to find something on the Internet? In most cases, you pop up in a major search engine and type in the term or phrase you're looking for and then click on the results, right? But search engines weren’t always around.
As a kid, I used to think about the Internet when I used it. In fact, it’s nothing more than a network of interconnected sites that has become one of the biggest business facilitators of our time. Instead, the so-called Internet was a collection of FTP (File Transfer Protocol) sites where users could download (or upload) files.

To find a specific file in this repository, the user has to go through each file with a shortcut. If you know the right person, they'll be the ones who know the exact address of the file you're looking for. You can go directly to the file. Let's say you know what you're looking for.

This process makes it difficult and time-consuming to find files on the Internet. But earlier, McGill University students in Montreal decided there should be an easier route. In 1990, Alan appeared and developed the first search engine used on the Internet. Indexing files on the Internet is called Archie.

If you’re thinking of Archie, a comic book character created in 1941, you’ll be a little off track (at least for now). I used the archive name because the filename was too long. Later, Archie’s friends from the comic book series (Veronica and Jughead) also came to the scene. But we’ll get there soon.
Archie wasn’t like the search engines you use today. But it was a program that many Internet users were happy with. The program downloads a list of all files stored on anonymous FTP sites in a computer network. I then plugged these lists into the searchable database of websites.
Archie’s search skills weren’t as good as the natural language skills you find in today’s most common search engines, but that’s when it’s done. Archie indexed the computer files, making them easier to locate.

However, in 1991, Mark McCall, another student at the University of Minnesota, decided that if you could find files on the Internet, you could find the plain-text for specific references in the files. Since no such application existed, it created a program called Gopher, which indexed plain text documents that later became the first website on the public Internet.

References within the indexes

With Gopher’s creation, there was a need for programs that could find references within the indexes created by Gopher, and eventually, Archie’s friends re-joined it. Veronica (Easy Radiant Oriented Net Wide Index to Computerized Archives) and Jughead (Joni’s Universal Gopher Hierarchy Excavation and Display) searched for files stored in the Gopher Index system.

Both programs work in a way that allows users to search for keywords to show.
From there, as you know, it matured. The first real search engine, in the form we know it today, did not come into being until 1993. It’s developed by Matthew Gray and called Yandex. Yandex was the first program of both indexes and search the list of pages on the web. This technology was the first program to crawl the web and later became the basis of all search crawlers. And from there, the search engines made their living.

From 1993 to 1998, it created the major search engines you're familiar with today in this Google SEO Guide.
