To write HTML tags, you’ll need a high-quality text editor that supports the language of the web. A notepad is a good option for Microsoft users, while Textmate is ideal for Mac users. Cross-platform text editors include Atom and Sublime Text.
You can create websites strictly using HTML, which translates to text files named with the extension .html. Your site’s main page is usually titled index.html. Create and save this file, then populate it with the basic framework of your HTML site. It will look something like this:
Tags enclose the entire content of your site and show that it is an HTML document. It is used to group content within a page. Think about the articles you find online that are grouped under individual topics. You can use div tags for individual pieces of content on a page such as a blog post, image, video, or contact form. This is a way of structuring the page so that these objects are easily identified. Your footer is at the bottom of the website. Developers use this area to insert contact information, terms of service, privacy policy, and social media links. You may also want to add a basic navigation bar to your site. It provides easy access to the main pages of your site. You’ll use the nav tag and the unordered list tag to sort it.

You can make your site more visually interesting with formatting, colors, and images using HTML. But adding CSS, or cascading style sheets, to your site gives you more control over its appearance.
External styling is stored in a CSS file that is attached to the head tags of your HTML files. The CSS file is usually titled styles.css. Some of the basic functions of the CSS include adding colors, borders, backgrounds, and page layouts. This step is more advanced than using basic HTML, but it can enhance the aesthetics of your site.
Once you’re happy with the layout, you can publish your site. That’s fine if your site is basic, to begin with. As long as it looks professional, you can feel good about putting it on the web and can improve it as you develop your HTML and CSS skills.
